Due to the pandemic, we have to be sure we are taking every measure possible to prevent spreading the virus to one another. Because using radios often requires putting the device close to our faces, devices that others have used or are going to use, if the proper precautions aren’t taken, then they can become an easy way for the covid-19 virus to spread. Below we will talk about cleaning and disinfecting push-to-talk two-way radios and best practices for sharing radios.

First, before and after using radios, it is essential that they are properly cleaned and disinfected.

Cleaning Steps:

  1. With a cloth, apply 0.5% detergent-water solution.
  2. Use a short-bristled, non-metallic brush into the radio to remove excess dirt.
  3. Use an absorbent cloth to remove the solution and dry the radio.
  4. Make sure no dirt or cleaning solution is stuck in the cracks of the device.

Disinfecting Steps:

  1. Wipe down the device with a cloth treated with rubbing alcohol that contains at least 70% alcohol. Make sure the alcohol isn’t applied directly to the device and an intermediary like a cloth is used.
  2. Certain chemicals and their vapors can be harmful to plastics and metals.
  3. Do not use bleach or other chemicals on your devices.

Best User Practices for Sharing Push-to-Talk Two-Way Radios

One way that the virus can spread is through the sharing of radios. In order to combat the spread of germs, we recommend using a personal radio audio accessory. This allows each user to holster a radio in a carrying belt and only touch, talk, and breathe onto their own audio device. Once they are done using the radio, they can simply remove the accessory and allow the next user to attach their own personal accessory to the radio. Furthermore, when using the radio, insisting on the use of gloves will help prevent the virus from getting onto the radio and infecting others.

It’s important to keep in mind that if you or your employees is sharing any devices, like push-to-talk two-way radios, it is essential that you take the proper steps to prevent and stop the spread. Make sure that all of your employees understand the necessary steps to go through before and after using shared devices, and that failure to follow the procedure could lead to their fellow employees being exposed.

Furthermore, if some employees fail to follow the procedure, write and hand out an official policy that explains the new procedures and penalties for not following them. Make it clear to all involved that this is an essential part of your business’s operation.
